What is the MIPS Safety System?

Gabe Wagner

At a small facility in Täby, Sweden, a group of engineers and neuroscientists has dedicated their studies to a single goal: to reduce head injuries. And save more lives. Over the past 25 years, and through tens of thousands of impact tests, Mips has significantly advanced the understanding of head injuries, and the science of preventing them. The Mips System is integrated into helmets designed for rock climbing, snow sports, biking, and many other activities. Today, that small, yellow sticker, found on helmets from brands like Smith, POC, Black Diamond, and many more, signifies the integration of the Mips system.

There are more than one Mips systems, but the technology consists of a low-friction layer between the helmet and the head. The Mips Safety System is designed to reduce rotational motion to prevent brain injuries.

Angled impacts to the head (like getting thrown off a bike) can cause rotational motion - which is more harmful than linear motion because it causes different parts of the brain to move differently, which can result in concussions or other brain injuries.

Here at Outdoor Gear Exchange, we carry a wide variety of helmets for outdoor activities that feature that yellow sticker - so you know you’re covered as best as possible from head injuries.
